Hometown Tourist: Breakfast at Saratoga Racetrack

At least once during racing season, I have breakfast at the Saratoga Race Course clubhouse. It's one of my favorite Saratoga traditions.

Throughout the summer racing season, from mid-July through Labor Day, breakfast is served on the clubhouse porch daily from 7am to 9:30am, except on Tuesdays, when the track is closed. It's a fairly extensive hot-and-cold buffet with table service for coffee and beverages. Dress is smart casual. Ask for a table close to the rail for a great view of the horses going through their morning workout.

Price tag: Buffet, $14.95/adult and $7.95/child ages 3-12. Parking at the race course costs $10 — but the fee is refundable if you leave before 10am and don't stay for the races. After your meal, you can go for a free 45-minute tram and walking tour of the track's historic backstretch area, which includes a demonstration of the starting gate. Tours depart from the clubhouse every 15 minutes from 8am to 9:15am.
